3-Way Strat Wiring
Another popular Strat wiring setup is making use of a three way switch - despite the tonal range of a 5 way switch, not all guitarists like it and avoid using the inbetween switch positions. This 3-way strat wiring makes use of two volume controls - the main control, naturally, and the middle tone control is replaced with a volume control dedicated to the middle pickup. This allows you to use the middle pickup on its own.

Use the main volume control to change the output of the switch
Use the midle volume control to change the output of the middle pickup
This setup is wired so that the two volume controls are independant of each other, allowing you to get the middle pickup by itself.
